(Endodontics)
Root canal treatment is the process of removing the dental pulp or the small-sized tissues located at the center of the tooth which is often damaged, inflamed, or dead. When the dental pulp is affected, the tooth is at risk and it is necessary to remove it. The remaining space is then cleaned, shaped, and filled. This process involves sealing the root of the tooth. Before, teeth with affected dental pulp would have to be extracted. However, nowadays, root canal treatment helps preserve the tooth. It is important to
understand the significance of dental roots.
  • The dentist will remove the inflamed or infected dental tissue.
  • Clean the root of the tooth and apply medication into the root canal.
  • Sealing the tooth root with a temporary filling material to prevent reinfection.
  • In some cases, such as when there is an abscess at the root of the tooth, it may be necessary to perform multiple cleanings and change the medication in the root canal until the infection or inflammation subsides.
  • When the root is disinfected, dentists will permanently fill out the root canal for restoring the teeth
  • There are several methods to restore a tooth to its normal function after completing root canal treatment, depending on the condition of the remaining tooth structure. These methods include dental filling, placing a dental crown, or using a dental bridge.

Maintaining and preserving natural teeth after root canal treatment is generally considered better than using dental prosthetics because a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment remains like any other natural tooth in the mouth. It has a supportive bone structure that provides stability, strength, and a better overall sensation compared to dental prosthetics.

  • Pain during the treatment: This is especially common after the initial root canal treatment. It can occur frequently and may be accompanied by gum swelling.
  • Pain after the completion of the treatment.
