(Implants)

A dental implant refers to a surgical procedure where a metal alloy or framework is placed beneath the gum line in the appropriate position of the jawbone. Once in the proper position, the dentist will attach a new tooth to the dental implant, creating a strong and stable tooth similar to a natural one.

Dental implants work in conjunction with the jawbone once they have successfully integrated with each other. When the prosthetic teeth attached to the dental implants are properly aligned, they will not shift or move from their intended position. This is particularly beneficial during speaking and eating. Dental implant placement aids in creating dentures, crowns, and bridges that feel more natural than traditional dentures or regular dental work.

For some individuals, traditional dentures or dental work may not provide a comfortable fit which may cause sore spots, discomfort, or even protrude. Sometimes, they can trigger a gag reflex. Additionally, traditional dental work often requires attachments or clasps on adjacent teeth or gaps left by missing teeth. The advantage of dental implants is that they do not rely on neighboring teeth or gaps. Instead, they are inserted directly into the jawbone to replace the missing teeth.

To prepare for dental implant placement, it is important to have healthy and strong gum tissues and sufficient bone structure to support the implant. It is also necessary to commit to maintaining the health of the gums and bones. Regular and thorough oral hygiene, as well as scheduled dental visits, will ensure the longevity of the dental implant.

Normally, it depends on various factors, but typically, dental implants can last from 10 to 20 years. The longevity of the implant is influenced by the position of the tooth root and the patient's oral health. It is crucial for patients to take good care of their oral health and adhere to regular dental visits. This is because the dental implant may be subject to impact and wear over time. It is important to note that traditional dental implants placed in the front of the mouth may not last as long compared to implants placed in other positions.

Dental implants are a method of tooth replacement for missing teeth which falls under the category of fixed prosthetic teeth that are securely attached within the oral cavity through the use of dental implant placement. The dental implant is made of a biocompatible material, typically titanium, and is inserted into the jawbone.

The dental implant consists of three main components:

  1. Fixture: The dental implant fixture is made of titanium, which resembles a tooth root and is securely embedded in the jawbone. It provides a stable foundation for the replacement tooth without causing inflammation or any adverse side effects.
  2. Abutment: Once the dental implant is placed in the jawbone, it requires approximately 4-6 months for osseointegration, the process of the implant fusing with the jawbone, to occur. Afterward, an abutment is attached to the implant to serve as a support structure for the subsequent crown.
  3. Crown: The crown is the visible part of the dental implant that sits above the gum line. It is typically made of porcelain, mimicking the shape, appearance, and color of a natural tooth.

Step 1: Dental Implant Placement
After the surgical procedure, the incision is sutured and allowed to heal. The body then undergoes a process of bone formation to integrate with the dental implant. Normally, it takes about 3-4 months for the lower jaw and approximately 6 months for the upper jaw.

Step 2: Second Surgical Procedure
In the second surgery, the gum is reopened, and the abutment, which is the connecting part, is attached to the implant that is embedded in the jawbone. The incision is then closed, and the abutment is visible, ready to support the subsequent prosthetic tooth. (Note: The second step may not be necessary if the dental implant has successfully integrated with the jawbone in the first surgery.)

Step 3: Prosthetic Tooth Placement
A prosthetic tooth, such as a crown or a removable denture, is created to fit over the abutment and dental implant. The prosthetic tooth is securely attached to the abutment and dental implant, providing a functional and aesthetic replacement for the missing tooth.
